As the original magnet high school in the country, we have a student population of approximately 4,500 students and 400 teachers and staff in one of Texas' largest urban settings. We are the second-largest high school in our city and a Title 1 school. Though some of our students still attend some of the magnet programs at our school, the majority of our students are neighborhood students. Approximately 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged and approximately 50% of our students are at-risk. Due to the low socio-economic status of many of our students, many of them have not been raised with an appreciation of pleasure reading. Many of them have never owned a book.
