My students have struggled with fighting feelings of failure by the time they reach my classroom. They are generally over 2 years behind in reading and writing, have been in remediation courses before, and are now fighting against time to prove statistics wrong. They want to graduate. They want to attend college.
In this first year in my middle school, I was heartbroken when my students told me in the beginning of the year that they feel stupid. Even though I reassured them that they are smart and can succeed, it is difficult to look them in the eyes and say, "YOU CAN DO IT", when we struggle with technical issues in the classroom that makes their learning frustrating.
