I teach in an inner city school in which the poverty rate exceeds 70% of all families. Many children come to us not knowing the difference between a number and a letter. Other kids come in ready to read simple words. It is a bit of a melting pot of people and ability.
My school is one of five in this small town. We have six kindergarten classes, five first grade classes, and five second grade classes. We do many activities in order to reach out to the families and get them involved in reading and learning.
