I teach 8th grade social studies in North Carolina. My students will soon be going through the revolutionary war and the curriculum calls for examination of democratic ideals, different viewpoints and how citizen actions influence outcomes. The book "My Brother Sam is Dead" covers several of our standards and helps students become more analytical when it comes to history. My students will work in literature circles, reading together as a class and will compare and contrast this novel of historical fiction with some actual primary sources. I have students on varying learning levels and this book will help all of them.
