My 1st graders are enthusiastic learners in a high-risk district where all students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Our school does not have a library or computer lab. The town library is open on a limited basis and many families have no car. My Master's Thesis underscores the literacy benefit of exposure to fluent readers in a 1-1 setting. Though I cannot individually read to each of my students daily, I DO have technology that will provide examples of fluent readers from free websites. Yet, my students do not have headphones or ear buds. Sharing a few class sets is unsanitary and exacerbates transmission of germs and pests. Providing each student with individual head phones or ear buds will help me support my budding readers in their life-long journey toward comprehension, fluency and expressive reading.
