My students come from dozens of different countries and speak many different languages. Most of them live in apartments and can't practice their instrument at home, so they come to school early or give up recess just to practice. I have had students say that orchestra is sometimes the only reason they came to school that day. Every day, I'm impressed by how much they deal with at a young age and how hard they work to improve.
My school is a Title I school, and I'm so thankful that these students have the opportunity for instrumental music lessons in 4th and 5th grade. Most of them would not be able to afford private music lessons, so school music lessons are the only way to open the doors to amazing opportunities in the future. In orchestra, they not only learn an instrument that can take them many places, but they develop a strong sense of self-efficacy and community with their peers.
