Based on the research by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), indicates, “Reading is the single most important skill necessary for a happy, productive and successful life. A child that is an excellent reader is a confident child, has a high level of self esteem and is able to easily make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn."
As a first grade teacher I know the importance of children reading every night. Working in an inner city , in school that has 100% free breakfast and lunch, I also understand the that not each child has access to books. As a way to promote reading at home, my hopes is that these book totes will be a great way for my students to read leveled text appropriate for their reading level.
Each student will have his or her very own book tote to take home nightly. Students will get an opportunity to shop for books every week. Students will choose books that are "just right" and books that interest them. I have a variety of fiction as well as non fiction text. Also, as students are introduced to new text during small group reading these totes will be a great place for them to store their books in the classroom. They will have access to them, and when students completed their work, instead of "what' s next" students will know to read.
Students will be responsible for their totes and the materials in them. Students having love for reading is the ultimate, life long goal!
