My students are amazing. First graders grow in their literacy every single day and this group is no exception! They have a love of all types of books and they can't get enough time reading, however even with a small class I need to spend time with each student individually and in small groups to help support their learning to read. Giving them an opportunity to hear stories that are at and beyond their independent reading levels allows us as a whole group to discuss stories and develop relationships between the stories they listen to and their everyday lives. We can look at history and stories that come with lessons and look for ways to make our school, our community and our world a better place. Many of my students are from low income families, about 70% of our school population qualifies for free/reduced lunch programs and reading allows them to explore an unlimited number of destinations, experiences and cultures. The only travel many of my students will ever do is in books.
