Our school is predominately African-American students where 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students currently have difficulty reading at their independent reading levels. This is due in part to their lack of motivation to read. Lack of high-interest books in our school's library add to that lack of interest. Our school's budget has been so scarce that our media specialist has not been able to order new books for the library in years. Building up my classroom library with high-interest books will allow my students to check them out and read them for pleasure. This will increase their reading fluency, comprehension, and interest. If their interest increases, so will their motivation. Coming from an area that is low income, many students do not even own books at home. I think this is a good place to start.
