My 18 second grade students are a culturally and language diverse group who attend school in a low-socioeconomic area in Hialeah. Spanish is their first language. They do not have computers, Internet or access to technology that most of us take for granted. Like all young learners they love technology and become engrossed in learning when they get a chance to read on our only two computers. Our school has a high disadvantage rate and is on 90% free or reduced lunch and breakfast. Their parents try to provide their children with valuable learning opportunities but due to the economic hardships they face are unable to furnish "real-world" educational tools such as technology-based learning devices. The use of technology and their children's learning is left in the hands of our teachers. My students need these two tablets to help stimulate their minds, to assist them in language learning, to enhance their reading skills, and to allow them to gain access to world's knowledge.
