My 5th graders attend an inner city school and face many challenges. Most of my students come from economically disadvantage backgrounds and are learning English as a second language. They are not exposed to a rich literacy environment at home and so its very important for me to provide this exposure at school. I am their reading teacher this year and I am working with them to become more independent readers. Many of my students will be the first to graduate high school and attend college in their family. Regardless of the obstacles they face I see the passion and desire to learn.
