My group of 6th and 7th grade students is a diverse group racially, socioeconomically, and developmentally. Roughly 40% of my students are Hispanic, 20% are white, 15% are African American, 15% are Asian and 10% categorize themselves as other. 20% of my students receive special education services. The majority of my students have a tremendous desire to do well in school and have a dream of attending college or joining the military after high school. Their career goals include becoming a doctor, police officer, teacher at varying levels, firefighter, among others. However, there are numerous obstacles in their way. One main obstacle is that over half of my students are functioning below grade level in reading, writing and math. And this gap has grown as they got older. They attend a kindergarten through 8th grade school which allows them to really get to know the teachers and develop relationships with them. This school is in an urban area which suffers from many urban issues.
