Students need manipulatives to help them visualize what is too small to be seen.
Shape and polarity is everything when it comes to biology and chemistry. With these sets my students can visualize the 3-D molecules that exist in real life. This is much better for understanding than the two-dimensional Lewis dot structure we learn. I try to emphasize flat paper is not reflective of real life dimensionality but holding a molecule in your hand is a better way!
I mainly teach Physical Science to 9th graders. I teach my standards, and I build an understanding for students who will move into Biology. Many of them will also move into Chemistry. I try to teach a solid foundation for understanding electron orbitals so they can be successful in future learning.
