I have students with severe and profound physical and mental limitations such as students in wheelchairs that can only move a couple of fingers to students that are athletic physically, but struggle mentally and emotionally. My students attend a low budget school in an urban area of Georgia, and many of them face challenges in their daily lives above and beyond their special needs. However, they enjoy coming to my PE class and for the time that they are I see them enjoying golf, volleyball, basketball, and other team sports. They enjoy working together as a team and challenging themselves physically. The laughter and light in their eyes as they get on base in kickball, or make a save in volleyball make my day worth it. We even helped one special needs student join team sports with the regular education children and he is thriving. I love providing these opportunities to my and students and I hope that the support I receive will allow me to continue these opportunities.
