My students are 6th-8th grade students who attend a public school. They are typical middle school students who want to learn how to play a musical instrument. We live in an area that is prone to hurricanes and floods. Many of our families are constantly rebuilding or repairing homes because of these types of settings. Many of our students come from families who cannot afford to send them to school with the uniforms required by the school system. They are great kids who just want a chance to learn like everyone else. We have about 140 kids in band right now. Many of these kids cannot speak English, or speak very limited English and are constantly trying to understand what it is we want them to accomplish. We live basically in a fishing community where most people trawl and fish for a living. It is a wonderful community to live in, but the challenges are great at times.
