My 5th-grade beginning bands at three elementary schools have 40+ students each. The students are from 10 -11 years of age. They come from low- to middle-income families with about 65-80% receiving free and reduced lunches. This doesn't hold them back! My students are very enthusiastic about learning music. They practice daily and come to school showing me what they learned at home on their own.
Each of my schools have Pre-K through 5th-grade students. We have a General Music teacher that teaches classes in grades 2-5. This has increased the participation in our band programs.
