I work at a Title 1 elementary school in Hawaii that serves 643 students. About 40% of our kids come from military families, as we are right around the corner from one of the bases on the island. The other 60% consists of first generation immigrants, Native Hawaiians, and many other ethnicities. This school truly is a melting pot of cultures that come together to represent its community.
I teach PE to all of the students at this school, ranging from pre-K to fifth grade. I also teach Adapted physical education to students with special needs. This is my second year teaching at this school and I see the need for more PE in order to give these kids the skills they need to be physically active in the future. Many students are lacking the fundamental motor skills needed in order to participate in a variety of games. Though this is slowly changing, childhood obesity has always been a part of this school. I am working with the students to fix this issue, but I need help.
