I’m a strong proponent in being proactive rather than reactive. Ignorance causes fear, and with knowledge comes power. High interest books can get our students reading, and understanding, the issues and challenges of the world. Reading about situations of other characters help my students see themselves, see their friends, and understand what realities are outside of our community. Through literature, we can help our students as they find their way through adolescence. Books that provide experiences on difficult topics are high interest and will get my students reading. The books were chosen to address difficult social topics and focus on helping students to overcome prejudice, break cycles of fear, understand human needs with compassion, broaden outlooks to appreciate cultures, accept responsibility for the future of all people, approach life with confidence and strength, and solve problems courageously. Students will be empowered through literature to not only grow academically, but also socially and emotionally.
