My students are first graders in an inner-city public school. They speak English as a second language and come from families where getting an education was not an option. Many of my students are new to the United States and some have never been in school before. Their parents are dedicated to providing their children with the best possible education, but they are unable to help them with their studies since they are not literate in their native language. Providing students with word journals will allow them the independence they need to be able to complete assignments independently and with confidence.
