My first grade classroom is in a small "rural" school in upcountry Maui. The best part of Makawao School is its heart and ohana (family) feeling. Our school motto is "Be Kind!" and this feeling and attitude is evident from every member of our community. My students come from diverse backgrounds. The main ethnic groups are native Hawaiians, Caucasians (many from the Portuguese community), Filipinos, and Micronesians. 60% of our population receives free or reduced lunch. The diversity of this small and loving school is what I find most enticing and challenging at the same time! I firmly believe that the arts need to be incorporated into the curriculum in order to meet the many needs of such a wide range of learning styles and cultures. Our society has put test scores above learning and this has stifled our education system. My goal is to make learning meaningful, creative, and fun to help every child succeed!
