Our school is not very large, serving less than 500 students in grades pre-k through 6th grade. The school is central to the community enabling many families to walk to and from school each day. The students in my multi-grade class are similar to their peers in that they like to run and play ball during recess, they like to sing songs and work on the computer. They are unique in the sense that they don't communicate using words instead they may take you to the cupboard and put your hand on the cookies they'd like. My students prefer routines and adherence to sameness more than most other students. They have a slightly different perspective which makes them endearing to anyone who meets them. They prefer to be alone and yet you can't help but be drawn to them and hopeful for an invitation into their insight.
