In my classroom, you will find a fascinating group of kindergarteners who are very enthusiastic about their first learning experience. They have such a thirst of learning and using technology.
My Project:
As a teacher, one of my biggest obstacles is being able to meet the individual needs of each of my students. Time is always a factor when teaching kindergarten. I work with small groups as much as possible. In order for small groups to be effective, that are not teacher directed, and run effortlessly and can besuccessful, the other activities must be performed independently. While my focus is working with a small group, the other students can be found learning on iPads, at the listening center, or reading with Tag Readers or working on computers.
My students take part at our school computer lab one day per week for twenty five minutes. In the computer lab, they learn how to log in with their username and password, practice basic computer skills, and develop math and language arts concepts through many websites. Because time is so limited in the computer lab, my students require more time to work on computers in the classroom. The space in my classroom is very limited, the computers the student use currently are very bulky, outdated and slow. The students do not have room in the area to properly use the computer and the mouse. The computers take a long time to load and that leaves the students feeling very frustrated with no time to explore the websites and to have a learning experience that is beneficial. Having a set of laptop computers and wireless mouses in my classroom would change the success of my small group instruction. Having laptops would give my students the space to work independently!!!
