The Specialized Instruction (ALE) classroom is composed of 17 students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. All of these students have either autism, intellectual disability, other health impairment, and /or a speech deficit. Several have all of the above. Some students have auditory processing and/or visual impairments, too. Due to their disabilities they need extensive modifications and accommodations in their classes.
These students have difficulty with academics, communication, independence, social issues, and functional behavior. My students do not have an innate sense of time. They do not realize time is running out and they need to do a certain amount of work in a time span. The major goal for students of SI is for independence, communication and employability skills.
