I have two amazing 1st grade classes which means that I have 40 students in all and 67% of my students are English Language Learners. All of my students want to become great readers, but they have many challenges that make it difficult for them to read. Most students do not have an English speaking parent to help them read at home. I believe that all of my students can be voracious readers by the end of 1st grade. The reading program I would like to put into place in my classroom recommends a library of 1,000 books or more. Research shows that by increasing the opportunities for students to read will increase their reading ability as well as get them interested in reading by finding books that they want to read. I know I will be able to have all my students reading on grade level at the end of the year if I have the books for a classroom library. My students come from very poor backgrounds and do not have the resources to purchase books at home, so I need to provide them at school.
