I teach in a community that is quite diverse. When I started teaching, I had a few ELL students in my classes and it frustrated me that they did not get the support that was needed. These students were scared, then bored because people figured they would eventually "get it" and did not try to give them the support they needed to learn. I knew that these students are here because their families wanted them to learn. These students are hungry for an education and value learning. They are shy and scared at first, but want to succeed. Our system is about 40% Hispanic at this time. We are a lower income district that struggles on state assessments. Our ELL department has expanded quite a bit. We work very hard to differentiate and provide access to as many tools as we can to ensure that these students are succeeding. My ELL partner and I service 175 students in our school alone.
