Immigration! My students benefit from intensive study of the written word. Most find reading a chore and tend to resist reading. A topic that is of interest to them is immigration. They need to be given opportunities to be exposed to the plight of many immigrants. The novel I've chosen is about a teenager and her family's challenges adjusting to life as immigrants. It will be read in a small group setting designed to facilitate direct reading instruction. In addition, students will actively engage in related activities that promote reading fluency and comprehension while integrating the skills necessary to function in a cooperative learning group. Learning to respond to and discuss books is challenging for my students making a solid book selection crucial. Without your help, these book will not be a possibility.
