Our school is one of 6 urban K-8 schools in the most densely populated city in New England. It is ethnically diverse, and a little over half the students are in the free and reduced lunch program. We also have two special education programs - physical and behavioral - that take in students from all over the city, and these students are included in music classes. My 6th grade class is a group that is extremely active and thrives on hands on learning which gives them direction. At this point, for some of my students, the instruments we have in music class are the only instruments they have any access to play. Yet they are very musical, and they love to own their learning. They know how to take a project, make it theirs, and be enthusiastic and active learners!
