Our students are intelligent and we want them to see that in themselves. The calculators are material, but holds the key to their success in math, on standardized tests, and onward to college or wherever their goals takes them. It is the opportunity for the students to practice for doing projects, assignments, and assessments.
All this is for the end in mind. Acquiring the IB diploma. My students are in year one, and the main assessment is taken in year two. They need the opportunity to utizilze technology (i.e. calculator, laptop) on a consistent basis to ensure success now and in the future.
A lot of the activities in class are mini projects and require the use of a graphing calculator. Also, the textbook we are using provides us with mini assessment, and again, require the use of the graphing calculator. In the long run, I want the students to learn and investigate on their own without limiting themselves or being intimiated by technology. It is their future; it is their world.
