Walking past the liquor store on the corner, the funeral home across the street, and the police cars making their daily rounds, my 6 year old students come to my classroom eager to learn how to read. While I cannot control what happens outside of the school, I know that a good education has the strength to change the life of a first grader when everything else seems to be against their academic success. A school has the power to transform a community. A single classroom can start this process by ensuring that all students leave first grade knowing how to read.
