I am the sole school counselor for 803 wonderfully typical and diverse students. Largely, they are art magnet students with 558 on free/reduced lunch, 232 Black, 110 White, 413 Hispanic and 48 Other. Counseling services are to 40 classrooms of an average of 20 students; individual, small group, large class. My school, similar to so many other elementary schools, unfortunately, have bullies, targets and bystanders. All of these students need to feel safe and comfortable every day that they attend school. That's my number job! A majority of students are in this school because their parents clearly have their "best" in mind. So many are from the neighboring disadvantaged community, nonetheless, their parents still wants the best for them. They all need to have the sense that in spite of societal or emotional interruptions they will be able to give their best and receive the wonderful experiences availed by this school. We all need more "upstanders" rather than "bystanders".
