My school is in an urban setting with high poverty rate. They also have parents who are working or have limited English proficiency to help them with reading. Over 44 languages are spoken at my school. I have 17 ELL in my classroom with varying reading levels as well as background knowledge. Many of them have parents who are working long hours or have parents who have limited English proficiencies. Therefore, they do not get ample opportunities to hear fluent readers and someone who can help them with their reading. I meet with them as much as I can during Guided Reading Groups, but they need more opportunities to interact with the text. They are eager learners and love participating during Reading Workshop.
