My students are bright and inquisitive and love learning about the world around them. Approximately, 85% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and many come from families who are financially strapped and are facing economic hardship. The school is located in a small city that was once home to many textile industries. With the closing of so many mills and factories around the school, work has often been difficult to find and many families live on the brink of poverty. In as many ways as possible, I want to give these students rich, literary experiences that will allow them to learn about different cultures, problems that other societies face, as well as thinking about the ways to make improvements. I think that it is very important that children are exposed to literature that teaches, literature that encourages and literature that inspires students to make a difference in the lives of others.
