My students have each been diagnosed with learning disabilities. They are reading below grade level and need a multi-sensory approach to learning in order to access and maintain interest in given texts. Many have not been exposed to the classic books that I would like to see them access through a listening center. My school is a Chicago public school and most of my students do not read at home on a regular basis and have not experienced the joy of books narrated to them. I am a resource teacher and do most of the language arts block with my 3rd-5th grade students daily. They are at a perfect age to thrive and take the path of loving to read yet need a lot of support to navigate that path. As my students have struggled with issues from comprehension and fluency to decoding and processing, reading has often been frustrating for these special learners. I want to share beautiful books with them on a daily basis to encourage their skills and their love of books.
