I teach in Houston ISD which is the largest and in my opinion BEST district in the state of Texas. Unfortunately, our district was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. It will take time to rebuilding and for emotional wounds to heal. My school was 1 out of 9 schools in a district of almost 300 schools who were informed that we will not be returning to our home school this year. We had to not only abandon our building, but all of our materials. We are a strong school community and are working very hard to obtain materials to take to our temporary building. We want to create a learning environment for our students that will encourage them to continue to grow and learn dispute the trauma we've all experienced due to the hurricane. Our students fall below the state average in reading compared to other low income students.
