Buck Lodge Middle school is a Title 1 school with about 1000 students and a 66% Hispanic population. We just received the 2015 MD Green School Award. I teach 6 grade science in the special education intensive class. My students disabilities range from Autism to Specific learning disabilities. Their skill levels range from pre-k to 2nd grade. My 6th graders are energetic and enthusiastic during science class. They are very dependent and they lack confidence in their abilities. Even though transition from elementary was difficult for them, they continue to improve on their basic skills. They excel in hands on learning and classroom discussions about the world around them. My students have been working on a garden curriculum all school year. We have been growing vegetables in a hoop house throughout the school year. My students have been looking forward to the spring so they can continue to beautify the school with flowers and butterflies.
