Graphing notebooks are an indispensable tool for 21st century math education. In our classroom, we use a wide variety of math tools to make sense of the big ideas: double number lines, tape diagrams, tables, arrays, algorithms, the coordinate plane, and so much more. In my years of teaching math, I have learned that the basic composition notebook is simply not a sufficient tool to make sense of the math work.
Whether we are lining up digits to perform a basic decimal operation, breaking down the distributive property, or simply creating a T-Chart, my mathematicians see countless situations where they can benefit from a graphing notebook. The graphing notebook allows for students to organize their work and to clearly communicate a particular big idea. In addition to this, the graphing notebook serves as an accessibility tool for my diverse learners, particularly those with fine motor difficulties and impaired visual spatial awareness. The graphing notebook also serves to supplement remote learning where students can physically work out their thinking through self-made graphic organizers and note-taking.
