Our class is a K-2 Life skills self contained class whose primary focus is to develop skills for independent living while placing an emphasis on functional academics such as self-care and communication. Although my students have special needs, ranging from Autism to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), they are eager to learn about new things in the world around them. Therefore, I must find creative ways to reach each student to ensure that they all engage in and have access to the same activities as their non-disabled peers. With most of my class being non-verbal, it is imperative that I adapt curriculum content in a way that meets both functional and academic needs.
We are based at a large elementary school with a high percentage of low socio economic status students, most of whom receive free and reduced lunch. Many of these students lack the opportunity to access various forms of technology or have someone that has the time to expose them to it in an educational setting.
