What child likes to eat their fruits and veggies? Part of this project in teaching the kids how to grow food, is to develop a love for it. While the focus is developing language and social skills for my students, the other students throughout the school that will take part, will learn how food effects the brain and body.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase auditory and spoken language skills, you will ultimately help to increase their social and academic achievement. My students work hard to learn strategies to listen, talk, make friends, and learn. Due to limited space for an in-ground project, the vertical tower will provide all of the room needed. This particular gardening tower allows space for a compost. The students will "read" about gardening, create a plan, and use the tools requested to get started. The type of composting suggested, requires the use of worms, so the students will need gloves, tools, watering cans, and a little soil to keep them protected and to get things started. It is our plan to invite other students, in particular older students to engage with the younger ones. Not only will the older students get an opportunity to grow food, my younger students will gain the opportunity to work with students who do not have a hearing loss.
Hopefully, with your help, if not this next school year, in ones to follow, students will be able to take food home, cook more in the classroom, or even set up a market. This small step is the first of many for my students to see themselves as capable listeners, speakers, learners and part of their school community.
