As we read each one of these novels we have classroom discussion about discrimination and prejudice in history. Because I teach a diverse population with two tribes of Native Americans it is a way to explore how this prejudice and discrimination, from slavery to the persecution of Jews during WWII, still affects us and our classroom today.
These books also help us to see that people do the right thing and help and respect others which is what I try to promote. They encourage discussion which has been an important missing component during COVID remote learning.
Many students have not had access to books at home during COVID or are able to discuss topics with others because of internet issues on the reservations.
