Students need continued exposure to non fiction text, not only to spark their imagination but also to ignite the wonder. Answering questions like why are bats nocturnal? Or why are Glass Frogs endangered? Exposing my students to this rich text will draw them into another world, opening their minds and existence to non fiction, real world matter. However to make this connection, they need to read books on their reading level. A classroom library filled with non fiction text will not only give them exposure, it will prepare them for Common Core Standards!
I teach in a Title I school where over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them have parents who are uninvolved in their education. No one is reading with them at home or listening to them read. But these kids WANT to learn. They love hearing stories being read aloud to them. I want to keep them engaged while they're under my care and foster a love of learning.
