My students live in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our school in a K-5 school with just under 800 students! 100% of the student body receives free breakfast and lunch and most of them receive government assistance.
Much of the fundraising/ donations we receive is for the basic needs of our children. We raise money for winter clothing, shoes, and food for their families. Many of my students depend on the school or myself to cover the cost of field trips. This leaves very little resources for hands on science materials.
My students WANT to learn but most of them do not believe that they can be whatever they want to be. They need inspiration and hands on experiences to make them understand that they can escape poverty and education is their key.
