Great reading begins with recognizing letter/sound relationships. I teach the English component of a Kindergarten class in a low income, urban area, dual language school in Connecticut. The students in the area mostly come from underprivileged homes and do not have many opportunities to be exposed to language at early ages. The focus of our school is for students to be literate in both English and Spanish by the time they become fifth graders.
