My students come from a challenging environment in an urban setting. Most of them are overage and drop outs. My school provides them a second chance to get back in education and complete the curriculum at a faster pace. The students are not the average students. Most of them have learning disabilities. They are far behind their grade level counterparts. So the learning environment in class has a profound effect on their performance. We follow block schedules where the class is usually 80 minutes. In such classes, we alternate between study and activities. We try to make learning a visual and participating experience so that they remain interested and take baby steps. But very soon, they are running at full steam!
