Cherokee Point Elementary is located in City Heights, San Diego's most diverse neighborhood. 85% of my students are English Language Learners, whose first languages include Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Somali, and many African dialects; a large number are refugees recently resettled in the US. Few of our students come from homes where one or more parents speaks English. It is also a high-poverty area; 100% of my students qualify for free lunch, and they lack access to enrichment opportunities outside of school. Traditionally, these statistics predict a difficult path for my students: that they will struggle with language and academics; that they will struggle with their sense of identity and belonging; that they will struggle to overcome tumultuous and often traumatic circumstances. I believe, however, that these statistics won't define my students. I believe that my students are capable of greatness, and that arts integration in the classroom is essential to unlocking that potential.
