We began a community garden last year and found it was very therapeutic for the students. The quietest students became leaders. Students began trying "healthy" foods and loved them. We brainstormed together and want to add a hydroponic system for lettuces and tower gardens for strawberries and herbs.
The students use STEM and science skills to design the garden beds, maintain logs of crops and insects in the garden. They take ownership of the garden and harvesting of the crops during the year. They also learn how to harvest seeds from the crop which they take home to create their own gardens.
The hydroponic and verticle gardens will be used to grow greens and fruit bearing plants. Learning to compost with worms will provide organic nutrients.
