The John McDEvitt Middle School in Waltham, is an urban middle school with 43 % of students whose fist language is not English, 47 % of students classified as "high needs" and 28% classified as economically disadvantaged.
My classroom is a diverse community of learners in every respect. We represent multiple ethnicities, speak different languages at home and come from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. We have different learning styles, challenges, and personalities. Together we explore the world through the lens of geography and current events. We begin by learning about a region's human and physical geography and then delve into serious, timely topics such as child labor, post-colonial Africa, and the ever-evolving Middle East. In addition, we collaborate with United Nations Association of Greater Boston to simulate the U.N. experience in a six-week unit that highlights pandemics.
