My students are bright, active young men who face extraordinary situations at home and on the street. Many of the young men at my school were or are involved in gangs, so it is very difficult to engage them in after school activities; however, they love participating in sports. One of our Varsity players is currently homeless and the team is one of the most important things in his life. Being involved with the team has taught him different ways to work with others. The team has not only helped him improve his behavior but also his academics have been on an uprise. Each player on the team has a different story; baseball brings them together and is one thing that keeps them going.
