The students in my program have varying degrees of special needs. This year I am hoping to increase their independence in daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, etc. by building an apartment lab to increase the authenticity of our vocational/life skills class. Many cooking utensils, a washer/dryer, stove/oven, couch, bed, dresser, etc. have already been acquired. I have a small refrigerator that does not allow me to safely keep the amount of food required for cooking labs that can accommodate the 52 students in the program. A larger refrigerator will allow for this and more complex recipes requiring more ingredients, as well as keeping the harvest from our learning garden fresher for longer. The goal is to recreate a portion of the classroom to mimic that of an apartment to enhance life skills. Students will have cooking labs, cleaning lessons, laundry, etc. A handheld vacuum for cleanup, a television to recreate the living room setting that will also be used from time to time for students to increase their social skills during breaks and parties.
