My kids love to read new books. I work to include literature not only in my reading lessons but also in my math, science, writing and social studies lessons. I feel that the more books you can expose students to makes a huge difference. It exposes them to a larger amount of vocabulary words and encourages a love of reading.
Using literature in all subjects shows students that reading is all around us and is integrated in every part of our lives! These books are great to use when introducing a lesson in any subject! Using books as an intro gets my students hooked on what we are learning!
Great books are also a wonderful way to teach life skills. It is a great way to start a discussion about how the students can relate to the characters and events in the stories. The skills we learn using great literature stays with them forever. My students are constantly pointing out things in other subjects or activities that are similar to something we have read in a book in one of our lessons.
