My students come from a wide range of backgrounds, and they bring diverse life experiences to their study of science. Some are Ojibwe and Dakota students whose families have been in Minnesota for many generations. These students are motivated to learn how science has traditionally been applied in their cultures and how they can use it to help address challenges facing their communities today. Some of my students are recent immigrants from Ethiopia, Somalia, Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Guyana, Nepal, and other countries who are learning academic English along with science. These students bring a global perspective to our study of science, and they are motivated to learn how science and engineering can be used to tackle challenges facing people around the world. In our class, students learn lab techniques, problem solving, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication skills.
